Speedo replace from mechanical to electric 200

Here's a question.I have an 85 240 with a mechanical speedometer.The needle is starting to wag pretty bad,and I happen to have a speedometer from an 86,(which is electric), and I was wondering if anyone has ever done a switch from mechanical to electric? I know it would involve some sort of sensor at the transmission tailshaft/driveshaft.
Maybe it would be less trouble to try and lubricate and/or repair the original?
