idle problems after getting wet 700 1987

I was driving my friend's '87 740GLE wagon in April and ran through a BIG puddle of water...so much so that it sprayed all up in the engine and got into the car.

It drove a about 1/4 mile and died. Finally got it started and drove it home...FINALLY got it dried out and running. However, it will only idle correctly now if the idle air valve or the TPS are unplugged. During the drying out process and subsequent starting procedures...it backfired quite a bit and I had sprayed a LOT of throttle body cleaner through to dry out the fuel system. It runs well once it's going but will not idle especially when cold.

Should I grab a used TPS from the junkyard? I have several extra idle air valves and even switched one out from a perfect running car so that's not it. The car does have the dreaded bio degradable wires but I'm HOPING that I don't have to switch out the wiring harness. If I unplug the TPS it idles and runs perfectly...but I know that messes up the mixture.

Thanks for any input...
