87-740 broken interior heat control lever. How to fix? 700

The lever came loose. Has anyone had to do this repair. The big question is:
Do I need to pull the whole thing out,and if so, how.
I have a slim hope that I can somehow reattach the lever. But something way in the back of my mind tells me that a total replacement of the panel will be the solution. Id appreciate any advice.
I have the manual type of temp control panel.
