Help me diagnose a hesitation at highway speeds, please! 120-130

So after six years sitting in the garage torn down for the restoration that never happened, I decided my 68 122s would get finished faster if I would reassemble it and start driving it. Then I would get the motivation I need to finish the paint job.

Its back on the road, and I've put on about five hundred miles in the past few weeks. It's running great around town under 40 MPH. Sometimes it runs great down the highway too, but it has an intermittent problem where it begins to hesitate at high speed (anywhere from 55 to 70) and then starts to lose speed until I can barely keep it going at around 50 MPH.

I first thought that the coil might be going bad, so I took along a spare, and rigged a way to power it. When the car started to bog down, I switched coils, solved the problem, and decided I'd replace the coil when I got home. Trouble is, before I got home, it started doing the same thing with the spare coil too.

So I decided to go through the ignition system with more care. I checked the dwell, found that it was a bit below the spec recommended in my manual, and decreased the gap to increase the dwell. No change in the way it runs, but at least dwell is within spec now. I also cleaned up the contact points, which are in good condition.

Next, I replaced the condensor. No change. It still runs great, mostly, but intermittently bogs down on the highway.

I checked the plugs, and they are all looking like the fuel mixture is OK, all of them tannish.

Any ideas out there? I've reached the extent of my ability to diagnose this problem.

Can someone explain the function of the valves that are located in the intake manifold, that are engaged by the throttle linkage at large throttle openings? Could that be part of the trouble?

Thanks,

Ted
