Oil in intake hose? 1991 240 sedan

Some of you have been helping me with advice with my 1991 240 sedan (300K), thank you I am learning a lot.

I had been having rough idle with occasional stalls at traffic lights. The codes, and the advice, pointed to cleaning the throttle body.

When I disconnected the intake hose at the MAF meter I was surprised to see oil- a fair amount, pooling in the undercurve of the hose.

How could this happen, and what does it signify? I mean, isn't that unusual and unwanted?

Later I noticed that the hose has a tear in it which probably contributes to my problems...I have cleaned the TB and am waiting for a new hose to arrive from FCPGroton. I've pulled the intake manifold and the gasket is fine. The flame trap was dirty but not unreasonably so. I also replaced the oil breather/separator.

Keith
