fast idle - hard start 700

OK I can't figure this out. My 87 760 turbo was running perfectly. When i came out of the store it started right up but all of a sudden the idle surged to 2000 rpm. I shut it off and then it would not re start...it would barely catch and then die. I thought it was flooded bec I smelt fuel...waited a while but no change. I unplugged the air mass meter and it started but ran lousy. When I plug the A.M back in the idle goes right back up to 2000 ? Any suggestions ????
