Tensioner pulley for timing belt 700

Hi,
I have a 1988 740 turbo (b230ft enginge) and I am in the process of replacing the timing belt. I am also replacing the tensioner pulley and this is were I have a question. I have looked over the faq and my manual but am unsure on how to reasemble the old spring to the new pulley. Do I just compress the spring and put the pulley back on? This may be an stupid question but I just want to be sure I'll be able to get the spring back together without any problems. Also is there a trick that will make this easy. Agian any help is appreciated.
Thank you,
Benton
