Flywheel facing engine block sensor wired to 4 pin connector? What is this? 200 1980

Started the tear down of my 1980 242 today and noticed a sensor screwed into the block on the passenger side, rear facing toward the flywheel. It looked like it could interface with the flywheel in some manner. There was a wire harness up to a 4 pin connector mounted on one of the valve cover nuts. There was a cover on the connector itself, and it looked like there was no other wire harness tie in that I could see.

I'm assuming this was some sort of diagnostic port. Can someone confirm this? If so, is there any practical use to me, or can I remove it?
