240 fuel pump fitting leaks after replacing pump 200 1986

I replaced the fuel pump on my 86 240 and the compression fitting on the front of the pump won't seal. The nut seems to bottom out before the fitting is compressed. I checked the check valve and it is the exact same size as the original. Is the only remedy to replace the line (and fitting) from the pump to the filter?
