'90 740 Turbo Wagon - died on road, won't start. 700 1990

While my son was driving, the car died. Car won't start, AAA towed the car home. The car had a new external fuel pump last year.

Tried so far:

Disconnect the intercooler air hose and spray starter fluid into the engine air intake while cranking. Not even a hint of the engine firing.

There is voltage at the coil low tension terminals.

A spark jumps across a 1/4" air gap to the high tension wire when the engine is cranked.

Next to check is the ignition amplifier and distributor - how to test that? I'll pull a spark plug and see if that sparks, but is there a better test?

Also read that a bad flywheel sensor could be the problem. How is that tested? Apparently the senor connector is on the firewall somewhere - anyone can describe a more precise location or picture?

Anything else to check? I know a jumped timing belt could throw the valve timing way off but am hoping the problem isn't that drastic and is in the ignition.
