Small clock wires touched and burned something 200 1988

I'm a fool for the VDO gauges and was about to wire in my new Ambient temp gauge. Didn't disconnect the battery and when I disconnected the wires from the back of the small clock, two of the three wires touched for about three seconds. It started with a spark at the wire tips then electrical smelling smoke exited the driver's side defrost vent on the dash. I'm going to wire everything up and hope for the best. I have spare clusters so if anything I'm hoping I just fried my cluster. I quickly popped the cluster out assuming that was the fire source but there is no evidence on the back of the cluster.

Questions:
Has anyone made this same, stupid mistake?
If so, what happened? Fried cluster? Or did I just fuse some wires in the cluster harness?

I guess I'll find out soon enough.

Happy new year Brickboard!
