Just replaced one. Questions/ comments:
1. Couldn't find the serial # on the housing. Driver's side middle? Facing front or back?
2. Haynes says "remove the seal's protective shield". Bentley makes no mention of any separate shield.
a. The seal I removed had a thin metal covering on the outside. The new one has exposed rubber. It didn't look like the metal face on the old one was removable.
b. Other vehicles I know of have a metal cup on the flange that covers the seal. The 240 doesn't. Easy to puncture w/ road debris.
3. The flange shaft where it rotates in the seal was thick w/ rust. I sanded w/ fine sandpaper & steel wool. But that part is inside the axle, covered with gear oil. How did it rust - seal bad for a long time? The washer underneath was clean.
4.Haynes goes through the 2 torquing procedures - 1 for the sleeved "S" unit, one for not-sleeved. Bentley just gives 1 procedure: torque to 150+ and go.
5. There also seems to be a small seep from the speed sensor fitting. This has a gasket?
