I read a couple posts about in place lubrication of blower motor. My cars are 240 1982 and 1991(this one never been lubed). Both show sign of lubrication deficiency specially when cold.
The 1982 motor was taken out and apart for lubrication in 1998. I remember I used a couple drops of sewing machine oil and also injected some SKF soft grease as much as I could inside the bushing compartment.
I have this old heater box I put away many years ago. It is also fron a 240 1982 with air conditioning. The motor shaft was very stiff in its bushings. I could take the cover near the brushes off but the other end snapped the bushing retainer washer off when I pulled on the rotor. It is a good thing because it allowed me to see the inside which is a felt donut and a spring that push the bushing in place. I did press that washer back in place and bent the sides to keep it in place.
I cleaned and re-assembled the motor and put it back in the heater box.
In order to lubricate the motor in place I cut two 2 inch dia. holes in the plastic housing about the motor end on each sides. Then I drilled one hole each end at the bushings at an angle of 15° more or less toward the motor center. The drill is no. 20 or 0.159 inch and 6 inch long. I added then 20 drops (0.75 ml)of 10w30 oil in each hole. Then I took the motor apart for inspection.
There was no sign that any oil reach the bushings and motor shaft. I added an other 20 drops of oil with nothing leaking, and 20 more for a total of 60 drops. Then some oil was coming out free. I assumed the felt was now soaked and there was excess oil. So 60 drops of oil is too much. In the other bushing I used 40 drops of oil(1.5 ml) 10w30. After I injected 2 ml of SKF soft grease with a hypodermic syringe. The taper end of the syringe fits perfectly in the 0.159 inch holes.
I now plan to do this work in my cars. It will be 1.5 ml of oil and 2 ml of SKF LGMT2/1 grease.
I wonder if someone else has done it through the vent and radio holes leaving the dashboard in place. I would like to hear. Sorry for the long post.
