My badly worn RPM Sensor (a.k.a. Impulse Sensor, Crankshaft) 900 1995

My 1995 945 S LPT stalled while driving recently leaving me with a tow home. It was a hot day, around 40 C. The On-board Diagnostic system showed a 2-1-4 error which indicated a RPM sensor fault.

I removed the sensor, located at the top of the transmission bell housing under the vacuum operated heater valve. The magnet was covered in 16 years of grease and road dirt and the wiring insulation had disintegrated.

I used a long (21") socket extension with a universal and 10 mm (M6) socket to remove and replace. The part number is 271949 and cost me $88 AUD.

The car runs like a dream now. I really like my Volvo :)
