Inner Tie Rods 700 1987

I need to replace the inner and outer tie rods on my 1987 760 turbo wagon. The last time I did this on a different 760 I had to use two pipe wrenches and lots of heat to remove them from the rack. Does anyone know the right way or a better way to remove these from the steering rack ? My method worked, but it damaged the end on the rack. Thanks for you help !!
