I am stumped.
My second 1988 Volvo resurrection this year. New head gasket on a 245 with M47 5spd transmission. New timing belt and idler. Set it all up, runs just fine. Hook up my timing light, and I cannot find the marks on the dampener pulley! Turns out I have to go under the car to find them.
So, what is up with that? I set all the marks on the CAM, IDLER, and CRANK absolutely correctly. The rotor is pointing at #1 on the distributor. The engine runs fine, but the timing marks are approximately 180 degrees from where they should be.
Is it possible this old dampener's outer and inner rings have slipped past one another? The rubber between them old and crumbly enough to allow slippage?
Without timing marks I can't begin to pass smog. The results were high HC, CO, and NOX. I may have other problems as well, but one at a time. First I have to be able to set timing! Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Bill
