Excessive Cranking to start...fuel pressure regulator or pump?? 700 1989

I just installed a new Airtex main fuel pump and an Airtex intank fuel pump, plus a new fuel filter. Most of the time she starts right up, but now after a long park (or overnight) it takes a lot of cranking to start up. Restarts right up after a quick turn off and restart.
I suspect that the new Airtex main pump does not have the anti-backup valve that the OEM Bosch pumps have. Is this correct? Or does the Fuel Pressure Regulator maintain the pressure in the lines for a quick startup??
I'll replace the FPR tomorrow with a new Bosch unit but the new one ends in 295 (the 294 is the one that FCPGroton lists for the 89 740). The 295 is a 3.0 bar regulator (same as the 294). Should this make a difference?
Thanks for any help.
