Tensioning springs - windscreen wiper arms 120-130

I am taking some items to a shop to be galvanized (zinc-plated) and want to include the springs that tension the windscreen wiper arms. They are starting to rust at one end.



Two questions:

Does it make sense to have the springs galvanized?

And, two, is there an easy way to get them off? I have made some attempts by pulling them lengthwise with a pair of pliers, but without success so far. They are just too strong.
