Had to pull the overdrive out because the cast iron piece between the gearbox
and the OD broke and allowed the OD to pull away from the gearbox (eek!). Towed
it home and replaced that piece, but now, when I tighten it all down, I can't
turn the flange at the rear of the OD with my hand (it's in neutral).
If I loosen the four bolts that go into the gearbox, allowing about 1/4" play
between the cast iron piece and the gearbox, I can turn the OD and gearbox as a
unit, but as soon as I tighten those four bolts, it binds up solidly and won't turn. When there is play, it looks as if the OD is moving forward and backward a hair with each rotation (in relation to the gearbox.
Could something be bent from the shock of pulling away from the gearbox? It
made a pretty good "thud" but seems visually okay, and the gearbox and OD turn
on their own when not hooked together. Is it possible to install the OD
incorrectly, regarding the shaft that comes from the gearbox?
Really stumped on this one.
Thanks!
