Slippery shifter problem. 900 1995

I have been enjoying my 940 for many years. The problem is the shifter. I can feel through the shift lever the "bumps" from P to R to N but once I get to D-2-1 there is no resistance. It just slides up and down from D-1-D with ease. I did a road test to insure the transmission gears were actually being selected in these D-2-1 slides and it is. How do I fix the shift control?
