What if I do this......what will happen? 200 1986

Presently, I have a automatic in my '86 with the original 3.73 rearend. Eventually I'll be installing a M46 and swapping the rear to a 3.31. What would happen if I were to install the 3.31 and run with the automatic until I get around to installing the M46? Good things......bad things.....or no change at all? Or should I just wait and do everything at once? Thing is, the rear is ready to put in now and the M46 is still in the process of getting everything together. Thanks in advance.
