1993 Volvo 940 Brake/Running Light Issue

When I step on the brakes, both brake lights come on normally. However, when I have the lights turned on, both rear stop lights are on normally but when I step on the brakes, the left light goes out and the brake light does not come on. The brake light does come on the right side. I replaced the double-filament bulb on the left side but that was not the problem.

Come someone help to 'shed light on this issue'.
