Passenger door problem (RHD) 700 1989

I'm having a door lock problem with my 1989 740SE. The car is RHD, and the problem is with the passenger (left) front door only.
All of the normal lock/unlock and open/close actions function normally except that the left front door locks itself after it has been opened and shut three or four times from the outside.
It can then be unlocked again from outside using the key or from inside using the interior handle.
The inside lock button on this door can be pushed down to the lock position when the door is open: this can't be done on any of the other three doors.
I suspect that some spring or blocking lever in the door latch mechanism has failed.
Any ideas on what to look for here?
