Turbine Noise 200 1987

Hello,

My wife has a 1987 240DL. Auto transmission non turbo. Recently the car has started making a loud whining noise, almost like a turbine sound that varies with the engin RPM. It starts at a low pitch and works up to a high pitch. It seems to go away at about 60 MPH. I can hear her a block away at night. I am sure it will have to go to a shop for repair. I was just hoping this might be familiar to someone. It would be kind of nice to have an idea what might be causing this and not appear ignorant when discussing the issue with a mechanic. Any ideas, suggestions or help of anykind would be much apprciated. Thank you in advance.
