Power brake fail mystery '89, 740T 700 1989

This happened one other time about a year ago. Stop and go traffic. Suddenly the I lose power braking! I have to stand on the peddle to make the car stop. I pull off into a parking lot and let her sit for a couple minutes. I do a few loops around the lot and the brakes come back to life. 10 more miles home and no further problems. Brake system checks out good but I replace the front pads anyway. No prob's for two weeks now.

I'm taking any and all ideas as to what the heck is happening.
