Hi,
I bought a Volvo 940 1992 Yesterday for my daughter. (I have two daughters and they have been told that if they want any kind of service, they should buy 240,740 or 940s.)
It was not running, had not been for half a year, and had been to a professional car workshop, where the car owner was told that the car after a few hours at 150$/hour was wheather-sick! He bought another car.
We Got it real cheap for about 1100$, (cheap in Norway!)Went to get it with my wife and a towing rope. I also brought a Fuel Pump Relay in case of this standard failure of the 940. The relay fixed it so we didn't need the rope. It ran a rough idle, but well at higher rpm/load.
I was a bit concerned with the rough idle, because when I pulled the spark plugs, they were quite good-looking. A little greyer than normal. I have mostly seen black plugs with rough running.
My first thought was the FPR giving too low pressure, but after some thinking and looking at this site, I tried to spray some Start Gas on the intake manifold.
Immediat result! The engine was clearly responding to this. Pulled the Intake manifold (and all the other hoses and bits and pieces ..), the intake manifold gasket was clearly not mounted correctly. Put it together with a new gasket and the engine meowed like any cat you ever have heard.
A cheap (and not to mention safe!) car for my daughter, who need the money to get a house!
Are the mechanics who know these cars dying out?
I do not know what to do when the last 240/740/940 is gone.
All thanks to this forum for great help!
