240 electrical problem 200

1989 240, recently when starting on the dashboard the little battery icon and brake light would be on then rev the engine a bit and they would go off and the volt meter would show output from the alternator. This morning I went start and it started but there was not any output showing on the voltmeter like the alternator was working. I suspect a relay somewhere is not pulling in ..any thoughts or has this happened to you? Any suggestions appreciated
