M46 shaft play......how much is ok. 200 1986

Just pulled a M46 out of a 1985 240 today. Found that the shaft coming out of the front of the transmission has some play to it. The one my son-in-law installed had no play to it. How much is too much and if it is too much, how to correct the play? Also, the junction to the rear of the tranny where the speedo gear attached, does that have to be capped off or is it ok to leave it alone since my '86 has the electronic speedo setup?
