Mystery hole in nose 1800

Trying to figure out what caused this...it looks like a factory raised rectangle in the lower part of the nose cowl behind the grill has been cut out. The car had dealer installed a/c (sticker from 1965 on the a/c unit). Is it possible they cut it out for the Condensor? I don't want to patch it during paint if it serves a purpose.
