Blower motor and resistor replacement 200 1992

Well, when driving the Blue '92 yesterday, I noticed the speed of the blower fan fluctuated and I noticed a slight burning/electrical smell. The fan only works on 2 speeds now and later in the day when I used the car, the fan did not work at all, only to suddenly start working again. So, it looks like I will need to replace the fan motor and the resistor. My question is, can I get to the resistor easily if I use the chainsaw method, and for those of you who have done this method, how badly is the cooling/heating effectiveness reduced? Thanks, in advance, Greg
