Air pump system causing smoke? 900 1996

When I start my 960 and the air pump comes on (you can hear when it starts), I get a puff of (white) smoke out the exhaust. Only lasts a second. No smoke when driving. No smoke when warm and the air pump doesn't run. Could there be moisture in the pump and it's blowing that into the exhaust? Have to admit, I don't completely understand the air pump system, so I'm hoping this is possible. No loss of coolant. New HG. Head was checked for cracks and resurfaced. Compression is 210-220 on all 6. Am I just being optimistic and fooling myself, or does this make sense?
