Hi all,
I've got some sort of intermittent starting problem over the past few weeks. A couple of weeks ago I dropped off my daughter (i.e., turned off the car for only about 5 minutes), then went back to the car. It would crank, but would not turn over. After waiting a few minutes, the car started up fine. Had the same issue one or two other times where it would only crank but not start, but after waiting for some time, would start up. I read through the BB and was reminded of the crank position sensor, which I had noticed was visually looking bad a while back. The CPS basically had all the outside insulation falling off. So I went ahead and replaced the CPS (no trouble pulling off the old one), thinking that may be the issue. After changing the CPS, everything seemed fine for a few days. Then yesterday I went to start the car and it just cranked but no start again. I didn't have time to check it yesterday, so just let it sit. Went out today and initially still just cranking but no start. I fiddled with a few things, checking the ignition wire from coil, plugs, etc. After fiddling around but not really doing anything, the car started up. So it seems that the intermittent crank but no start problem continues.
One thing I have noticed. Once the car is started, if I squeeze on the rubber covering on the wire harness right below the female connector from the CPS, the engine will sometimes cut out. I pulled back that outer rubber covering, but didn't see any exposed wires inside. But I can repeat the engine cutting out fairly consistently by squeezing on that harness side.
My first thought, is the new CPS a dud? What else might cause this intermittent problem. About six months ago I was having starting issues and figured out that the fuel pump relay needed to be resoldered. I pulled it again the other day and it seems fine.
Thanks ahead of time for your help and suggestions.
