Yesterday daughter called and stated that the car died and dash lights came on and won't restart with a jump, she tried twice and could not keep the car running.
Since she was 20 miles away, I had our friendly mechanic come up with tow truck. We arrived and jump started the car, alternator putting out 11 volts. Towed car home.
Today installed good alternator, tested at NAPA, is putting out 14 volts. I installed alternator with new ground wire and tried to jump start. Nothing. The jumper cables started to smoke, I pulled them off and rechecked connections , all proper, + to + and - to -. I checked the wiring on the alternator and the new ground wire was charred and melted. Stumped.
Stopped everything and wrote the Brickboard for advice please.
