Shift nob removal/shoulder pain. 200

I found this nice shift console at the pick and pull.

But I think I may have misunderstood about removing the shift nob: Which is the proper method,(1) removing the button and spring, then the nob, or (2) remove the nob, button and spring together? My thought was the button and spring and then the nob. However, it seemed near impossible without breaking the button, which I did. Button and spring went flying into the rear seat. Nob then came off with only a slight effort

Then, paranoid over the possiblity of breaking the shift button in my car, I set out to leave the button in place and remove the nob with brute force. Which led to the injured shoulder. Presently the nob has won, and is still in my car. Iam at this point, considering the saw.

I was able to get the nob to move a bit, but couldnt get it off.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Larue.
