If you were going to restore or rebuild a 240, what components would you replace? Following is a partial list, inspired by a project that I may be taking on in the near future to breath another decade or two of life into my wagon.
-Refresh front end (ball joints, tie-rod ends, wheel bearings, bushings).
-Replace struts and shocks.
-Replace all hoses and belts.
-Pull head, check for warping, do a valve job and replace head gasket.
-Replace water pump, t-stat, timing belt and crank seals.
-Replace all hoses and belts.
-Rebuild starter and alternator (versus buying rebuilt parts).
-Replace motor and tranny mounts.
-Replace oil pump and plumbing, replace bearing caps.
-Replace wiring harness and underhood fuses.
-Replace or resolder ALL relays. Upgrade fuse box.
-Go through transmission and replace all gaskets. For an automatic, replace clutch packs and valve bodies. For a stick, replace input shaft bearing and synchronizers.
-If a stick, replace clutch, resurface flywheel, replace rear main seal and CPS.
-Replace center carrier bearing and u-joints.
-Open diff and check for wear. Replace parts as necessary.
-Replace bushings in rear suspension.
-Check operation of fuel pumps, replace as necessary.
