Passing smog after an engine swap 200

Has anyone encountered difficulty with passing the California smog test after an engine swap....specifically, swapping a B230FT + AW-71 into a car that left the factory with a B230F and M47? I imagine that even if the car passed the emissions portion of the test, it would fail the visual inspection.

I've heard vague rumors about having your car re-titled, which then allows you to have it smogged as if the transplanted engine were the original engine in the car, but to do this I believe the transplant must be the same age or newer than your car. For example, you swap a B230FT out of a 1995 940 Turbo into your 1990 240 DL, and the car is essentially titled as a '95 940 Turbo and subject to the emissions standards for that year and model.

Does anyone have experience with this?

TIA.
