1993 240 wagon quit on the road 200

Good morning,
I was on this board a long time ago but had to resubscribe.

I was recently driving my '93 240 wagon on the highway, about 55 mph. Everything was fine and over the noise of the radio I heard something which sounded like nuts and bolts in a can.

Suddenly the engine simply quit and I managed to coast up an exit ramp and onto the shoulder. I let it sit and then tried to start it. Absolutely nothing happened when I turned the key; no starter noise, no clicking, nothing.

I'm hoping it's only the timing belt, but have a sinking feeling it's more serious. When the timing belt breaks (it's a 230FD engine), I'm sure the engine just stops, but wouldn't the starter at least spin?

Thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks!
