The title says it all...
I was a few minutes early for work today, so I decided to sit in my car for a few minutes, and listen to the radio for a moment, with the engine running.
I work just off of a major freeway, and decided to let my engine idle for a few moments, before I went into work. Well, After about 20 seconds, I thought I saw my oil light flicker. Sure enough, about 20 seconds later it flickered again, then about 25 seconds after that!
I have about 3,000 miles on my last oil change of Shell Rotella 15W40 and my oil is only about 1/4 of a quart low. It is still warm in North Texas, and I usually change to 10W30 for the winter. (Will do on my next oil change) I have a Mann Oil Filter in place.
After reviewing the Brickboard archives, it looks like the oil pump o-ring may be the issue. I replaced the oil pan about 18 months ago, and replaced the original o-ring at that time. Next to the blower motor, I think this ranks up there with the "Least Fun Job" to do, and I don't want to do it again. (BTW, a big Thank You to Art Benstein, for the online pictures that assisted me with the oil pan job last summer!)
I made sure that I put the o-ring in correctly when I did the oil pan job, however, the o-ring could be calling me out on that. I clean the flame trap system on a regular basis, so I don't think that excessive pressure from that is the issue.
My question to the Brickboard users is >>>>> I will probably dive into this job in the next few weeks. The light did not come on during my drive home, or in my driveway this evening. If I tear into this, should I coat a new o-ring with Permatex, so that it does not blow out again?? (Assuming that I find it out of place when I lower the oil pan). Or does anyone have any other suggestions??
BTW: I was shocked that a new oil pump is $325 from Tasca. Only $84 list price from FCP Groton. I know you get what you pay for, but I was really shocked to see Volvo so high. I hope that it is not also made in China or India, like the last few genuine "Volvo" parts.
I recently had to return a turn signal/high beam/cruise control switch to Tasca, that went south on me in 11 months. At least Volvo was nice enough to cover it under warranty for me.
Thanks for your input.

If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 331,020 miles, will she make it to 400K ?? >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}
