what is the industry standard for burning oil ? 200

hi sages- have a question i asked of chrysler almost 40 years ago . at what mileage/usage is a gasoline engine considered to be burning oil - excessive oil consumption. i had a 73 plymouth with a 318 v8 engine since new. for 60k miles i added no oil between changes(3k miles). at about 60k miles i had to start adding 1-3 quarts of oil during the change period(about 1k to a quart). chrysler told me then that the standard was 800 miles to a quart to consider it excessive and invoke the warranty to get it corrected at their cost. they told me at 60k it was off warranty any way. i dont trust dealer policies or pricing whether chrysler or volvo. took it way back then to a trusted independent mechanic who told me the 318 had bad valve seals which were trickling oil into the combustion chambers. said it was a common problem due to cheap oil seals/guides used back then. said answer was to remove and rebuild heads and use better valve seal materials. dealer wanted $1k and my mechanic wanted $500. didnt fix it but used firing cups on some of the sparkplugs to prevent oil fouling. havent had this issue yet on my 92 240- no oil between 5k changes and 223k,no smoke, but the prior owner did replace the head with a rebuilt just before i bought it. looks like the 240 redblock is in good shape for a while. my question is what is the mileage standard for excessive oil consumption today or with 240 engines? betting the standard is different today(no longer 800miles). also have you folks found volvos have much improved oil seals on the valves. dont hear much here about oil consumption on 240s in this forum. thanks tons oldduke
