valve/lifter? noise 900 1994

1994 940 turbowagon 300000 miles developed a tapping noise that follows the RPMs...
very obvious when gas applied... barely noticible when gas pedal released.
Any ideas that might explain this?... am I looking at the valve adjustment procedure in the FAQs?? any advise appreciated. thank you brickboarders.. this site has saved my bacon over the years.
