Stalled engine 900 1994

Hello
My wife was coming home from work yesterday during a heavy rain and her 94 Volvo 940 230FI with Bosch ignition dies about 1 mile from home and refuses to re-start.
She had called me when she left the office and told me that it had been hard to start when she was leaving, and was running very rough.
Apparently the engine stumbles and wont rev and then suddenly will run well until the engine is loaded (like going up hill) and then will falter again ....kind of like it's only hitting on 2 cylinders. She said that she had to lock out the Overdrive before the engine would develope enough power to pull the car.
I went to get her and tried to start the engine. After grinding the starter for a few seconds I finally got it to start, but it would barely idle...almost like it was hitting on 2 cylinders again. If I held the throttle about halfway open the engine would suddenly smooth out, but as soon as I put it into drive, it would start to miss badly again and stall. It did this about 2 times and then refused to start again...no sputter or anything.

I unplugged the Air mass meter and tried to start the engine but it made no difference...still nothing.
I pulled the relay block out of the dash to try and check the fuel relay but I couldn't find it. Apparently Volvo made a few of these 940's using the small cube type relays for the fuel....and placed it in a totally different location on the relay block???? I've just read up on them and am going back to check the correct relay....although I can hear the fuel pump running while I'm trying to start the engine.
I looked at the insulation on the crankshaft position sensor and it looked OK.
I'm going to check for spark at the plugs when I go back....between rain showers.....We have flooding here today in North Georgia.
I also intend to check the computer codes when I go back.
Any other ideas or anything I might be missing?
I replaced the timing belt last summer, so I don't suspect it....yet.
I've owned this car for 7 years and this is the first no-start....it's been a good one.

Thanks in advance for any response
steve
