Center armrest: grommets that attach rest to hinge popped out 200 1993

'93 245, 228k miles

The center armrest (with sliding front and rear cup holders) on my '93 245 came off of the hinge. There are two short little screws still attached to the hinge plate (where the bracket is mounted between the two front seats), each with a gold looking nut. The gold nuts were previously embedded in the underside of the armrest, but came out when the armrest was apparently pushed back up too hard or too much weight was applied on the front of the arm rest. The mounting bracket has a support that keeps the armrest supported about midway on the bottom of the armrest; however with the two short little screws and the gold nuts disconnected at the rear of the armrest, the whole arm rest just came off.

Should I try gluing the gold nut ends back into the armrest? If I try and drill a hole up through the bottom of the arm rest, it will look bad, and most likely will render the rear sliding cup holder useless.
Anyone had any luck with this kind of repair?
