I Seen the Needle and the Damage Done... 120-130 1967

Hello All:

1967 Volvo 122S Wagon. SU HS-6 carbs and continued trouble-shooting and refreshing. I am almost there. Two new needle valves and I should be straight.

Question regarding the float height. I saw something in a similar thread from 2010 that had pictures at one point but they are gone so I need some guidance. I watched the excellent Moss Motors videos on float height and they indicated to check float height thusly:

Invert the float bowl lid

Allow gravity to let the float lie and look at the distance relative to the lid

Slip a 1/8" or 3/16" drill bit along the raised lip of the lid and it should just graze the float

My floats are NOWHERE near that height - the distance relative to the lid is much greater. Before I start bending armatures I wanted to ensure I know what I am doing. One thing about the Moss Motors video that sounded inaccurate to me - he suggests that gravity does the same job as the fuel level, but gravity does not depress the needle valve and the fuel most certainly does. Should the float/lid distance measurement be made by gently pressing down the float to depress the needle?
