86, 240DL, standard trans .
Always there for me, has something or perhaps somethings going on with her.
Past week or so I have been hearing ,what i though was a failing throwout bearing.
It would come and go pretty much like throwout bearings I've heard before. O.K. i've needed to change the shift bushings and seals. Got to work Friday and the car had been howling at me intermittently during the day. Got to work and opened the hood and there was this sound of a dying bushing / bearing , trying to take a set of belts with it, but i could not for the life of me isolate it.
After work I drove home with the sound of an angry Banshee, for about ten minutes then it stopped, I was waiting for the car to do something but it just ran and took me home.
Next morning I opened the hood and looked at nothing in particular, But the starter just did nothing, So I bump started it, it was a little noisy so I put my meter on the alternator and it was putting out like 11.5v give or take so i thought, that could be it.
replaced the alternator with a spare, but now it won't bump start, and the starter is still doing nothing.
checked the voltages. Having 12v at the bottom wire when the ignition is keyed, and battery voltage at the big center lug.
Tried the starter port red wire and all i got was sort of a scratchy yellow spark,
My spare starter is currently hanging on my parts 86Dl.
Someone told me many moons ago (here on Volvo shelter and rescue) that removing the trans cross member, will let the trans move enough(to one side) to allow a normal socket, on the top bolt. Works for me.
I am concerned about the no bump start.
It's not going to get any warmer today and these parts aren't going to relocate themselves.
I'm going to wait till my anti-inflammatory kick in before I do any serious wrestling.
any thoughts or opinions on the diagnosis?
thanks as always
Paul
