How do I know if the connection at the front of my cat converter requires an internal ring at the joint or just the triangular gasket? I don't see a ring, but it may have rusted away.

The car has the original downpipe which mated well with the cat for many years. Now the joint leaks, and the flanges are rusted and weak.
