89 240 wagon check engine lights up when idling for 5 or more minutes 200

if I need to be idling in traffic it seems fine as long as it is in drive , when it idles in neutral the check engine light comes on...it seems to idle with a lope when in neutral...but more smooth when in gear...any suggestions? Thank you, Kris
