intermittent failure to engage the starter solenoid 900 1997

Well, my normally very reliable 97 960 has developed a starting problem. Occasionally it will not engage the starter solenoid when the ignition switch is turned to the start position. The car can be cold or recently run and may take several hours before it will start normally. It does not appear to be the starter or solenoid.

Since everything else seems to be working, lights, relays, etc., and the problem is intermittent, I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem?
