Oil Drainback - Erratic? 200

I have posted before about my '92 240's apparent oil loss. Recently replaced valve cover gasket and oil filler cap which took care of two small leaks. Took it for a 250-mile trip. Checked the oil afterwards, it lost 1/2 quart. Drove it around maybe 20 miles, bought some oil, but before I put it in, I checked the oil again and it was almost full. Both checks were done with the car parked in the same spot, level concrete, and it had been sitting for several hours.

Last oil change was 700 miles ago, Volvo filter and regular 10-30 oil, as always.

I don't know much about how the oil drains back to the oil pan. Does it go through drains, and could those be clogged so that sometimes it drains fine and sometimes it doesn't, giving erratic dipstick readings?
