Alternator ground wire? 200 1990

There's a black wire coming out of the wiring harness (I think) and it connects onto a funny connector which goes into the block. The connecter was corroded beyond use. Can I reconnect the wire anywhere? I mean, does it have to go back onto that strange connection site.
I hope someone know what I'm talking about.
