My '92 240 (with about 350k miles on it) is having some interesting (well, annoying) engine problems, here are the symptoms:

first the engine was misfiring around 2000 rpm, i cleaned the air intake/ throttle body (including, but not passed the butterfly)

now it only misfires in drive and reverse, and its surging about twice a second.

checked all the vacuum hoses, found that one had a slight effect on the engine. but here's the wierd thing, the first time i clamped this hose, the engine idled normally for a few seconds, then went back to surging. when i tried clamping the hose again it had no effect.

i tried to check the codes following a procedure i'd read online and only got "no fault" readings. i may be doing it wrong, who knows.
